The James R. Kerr Program, led by Dr. Andrew Simpson, identifies opportunities for, and facilitates, interactions between LICR investigators and leading investigators in countries that are scientifically talented but have had limited opportunities to establish international collaborations. James R. Kerr Program Investigators are a valued part of LICR's global research enterprises, and are currently to be found in Brazil, China, South Africa, Turkey, and the Ukraine
The James R. Kerr Program was established to honor the memory of Mr. James R. Kerr, Chairman of the Board of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research from 1984 until his death in 1995. Mr. Kerr achieved great distinction during his lifetime, first through service to his country during World War II as a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force and then as the Chief Executive Officer of Avco Corporation, a Fortune 500 company. A trusted friend of Mr. Daniel K. Ludwig, Mr. Kerr stepped in and assumed responsibility for all the Ludwig enterprises in 1984. As a consequence of his wisdom, vision, and leadership, LICR has the administrative structure and the secure financial base required to serve its long-term needs as a global research organization.
